Smash & Splash: Everything You Need to Know for Your Baby's 1st Birthday Session

A Smash & Splash session is one of the most joyful, messy, and memorable photoshoots you'll ever book. Here's your complete guide to making it magical.

A Smash & Splash session is one of the most joyful, messy, and memorable photoshoots you'll ever book. Watching your baby encounter their very first cake — with absolutely no rules about how to eat it — is pure, unfiltered delight. And then there's the splash: a warm, bubbly bath to wash it all away. Here is your complete guide to making it magical.

What Is a Smash & Splash Session?

A Smash & Splash session combines two distinct parts:

1. The Smash — Your baby is presented with a specially decorated cake (usually a small, single-tier 'smash cake') and given complete freedom to explore, touch, squash, and eat it however they please. The results are always hilarious and always adorable.

2. The Splash — After the cake comes the clean-up: a beautifully styled bubble bath or small tub filled with warm water and bubbles. The contrast between the cake-covered baby and the sparkling clean one makes for gorgeous, varied images.

When to Book

Aim for within a week or two of your baby's first birthday — close enough to be celebratory, but not so close to the actual birthday that you're overwhelmed with party preparations. We recommend morning sessions when babies are typically at their most alert and cheerful.

The Cake

You'll need to provide the smash cake — a small cake (around 4–6 inches) separate from any celebration cake you might be having at a party. Here's what works best:

  • Simple, white or lightly coloured icing photographs most cleanly and creates beautiful contrast against your baby's skin.
  • Soft sponge cake is easiest for little hands to squash and safest for them to eat.
  • Let the cake come to room temperature before the session — cold, hard cake is no fun for small hands.
  • Choose a flavour your baby has already tried, to avoid any unexpected allergic reactions.
  • Many local bakeries now offer dedicated smash cakes — often beautifully decorated to suit your chosen theme or colour palette.

  • Styling and Themes

We can work to a specific theme (floral garden, rainbow, woodland, neutral boho — whatever you love) or keep it simple and timeless. Let us know in advance so we can style the backdrop, props, and details to create a cohesive look.

    For outfits:

  • A simple white or cream romper or onesie looks beautiful at the start of the session and shows the cake mess brilliantly.
  • Bring a change of clothes and nappy for after the splash.
  • A cute towel or hooded bath towel for post-splash portraits is always a winner.

  • What to Bring

  • The smash cake
  • A change of clothes
  • Nappies and any usual baby essentials
  • Your baby's favourite toy or comforter
  • Any specific props or decorations you'd like included
  • Snacks for before and after (not immediately before, to keep appetite up for the cake!)

  • On the Day

Arrive a little early so your baby can settle and explore the space. We'll photograph some sweet portraits before the cake arrives — these are among the most treasured images from the session.

Then comes the main event. We'll place the cake in front of your baby and step back. Some babies dive straight in; others are more cautious and need a little encouragement — perhaps a parent dipping a finger in and tasting it first. Either way, we capture every moment.

The splash portion usually takes around 20 minutes, and we'll capture both the messy fun and the sweet, clean post-bath portraits.

    After the Session

Your gallery will be delivered within 2–3 weeks — a beautiful collection of images spanning the entire session, from the very first curious touch of icing to the last bubbly splash. It is, without question, one of the most joyful shoots we do, and we cannot wait to celebrate this milestone with your family.
