Tips for a Relaxed Family Photoshoot with Young Children
Family sessions with little ones are wonderfully unpredictable — and that's exactly what makes them so special. Here's how to set everyone up for a session that's joyful, genuine, and stress-free.
Family sessions with little ones are wonderfully unpredictable — and that's exactly what makes them so special. The candid laugh, the unexpected hug, the toddler who decides mid-session that they'd rather examine a leaf than look at the camera. These are the moments that make the best photographs. Here's how to set everyone up for a session that's joyful, genuine, and utterly stress-free.
Choose the Right Time of Day
Work with your children's natural rhythms, not against them. If your little one is usually happy and energised in the morning, book a morning slot. If afternoons are when they shine, let's do afternoons. Avoid scheduling sessions during nap time or too close to mealtimes — a tired or hungry child is nobody's friend on a photoshoot.
For outdoor sessions, we love the golden hour light — in the hour before sunset the light becomes warm, soft, and flattering. If evenings don't work for your family, mid-morning light is also beautiful.
Keep Outfits Simple and Comfortable
Children are much happier — and look much better in photos — when they're wearing something they're comfortable in. Avoid brand new outfits that feel stiff or unfamiliar, or shoes that pinch. Coordinate your family's clothing rather than matching exactly: think similar tones (cream, navy, sage, terracotta) rather than identical outfits.
Practical tips:
Arrive a Little Early
Give your family time to arrive, breathe, and settle into the space before we begin shooting. A few minutes for the children to explore the location and get used to my presence makes a huge difference. We'll have a gentle warm-up — a little wander, a little play — before we start creating images in earnest.
Don't Worry About Perfect Behaviour
This is so important: please release the pressure of expecting your children to perform. The goal is not stiff, posed, 'say cheese' photographs. The goal is *real life* — the way you actually look at each other, the way you hold your child, the way they run to you. Some of the most beautiful family portraits happen when a child is mid-giggle, mid-run, or burying their face in a parent's shoulder.
If a little one refuses to cooperate, we simply shift focus. We photograph the siblings together, the parents, the details. More often than not, the reluctant child will drift back in when they see everyone else having fun.
Bring Snacks, Toys, and Patience
A small bag of favourite snacks can be a lifesaver — particularly for toddlers. A well-timed raisin can turn a grumpy face into a beaming one faster than anything else. Bring a favourite toy or comforter if it helps them feel secure.
And above all: bring patience. Not just for the children, but for yourselves. If you're visibly relaxed and having fun, your children will follow your lead.
After the Session
We promise you'll be amazed at what we've captured, even if the session felt chaotic at the time. That's the magic of working with children — the unpredictability creates authenticity, and authenticity creates art.
Your gallery will be ready within 2–3 weeks, delivered as a beautiful collection of fully edited images you'll return to for years to come.
